The Big Pink : A Brief History of Love
released on 4ad Records
reviewed by Genna Al Tai for GBH.tv
Everything you can think of when it comes to quality electro-rock can be attributed to the Big Pink. The star pair, Furze and Cordell, had enough experience and multi-instrumental talent to get things going in 2007 and have had quite an exciting couple of months on both sides of the pond since then. Originally, the dynamic duo, Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell, started out in 2007, but didn’t release their single “Too Young to Love” until late 2008. But both Furze and Cordell knew what they were doing when it came to selling themselves.
With some pretty impressive work with bands that include the Klaxons and Titus Andronicus, both band members were involved in their own labels, some of which are Merok Labels and Hate Channel. When Feburay 2009 rolled along, Furze and Cordell signed on with label 4AD and shortly after won the Philip Hall Radar Award for best new act at the NME Shockwave Awards. Let’s just say, that February was a little bit busy for the Big Pink. Later that year, TBP released their new single “Velvet”, which was self produced and mixed by Alan Moulder. To top that, Furze and Cordell toured with TV On the Radio in Europe right before they got to start their own tour.
A Brief History of Love defines every aspect of bumping, London electro-rock. With an image that’s part Joe Strummer part Libertines, the sound that came from this duo wasn’t short of anything. Don’t let all the fancy mixing and heavy drumming fool you, this album means a whole lot. When asked about the content of the album, Cordell responded with ,” every different aspect of love... The good, the bad, the boring, the exciting, the dreams, the nightmares, the whole thing.” Listening to “Dominos”, you can definitely tell both band members have been around the block a few times when it comes to love and love lost. Lyrics that include “talks of future with you cave me in” and “three words we shared said too early on” clearly express some commitment issues. Not exactly romantic stuff, but great nonetheless. The album has everything. It goes from fast paced, dance worthy “Dominos” and “At War With the Sun”, to some very mellow tracks that include “A Brief History of Love”.
While their single “Dominos” was only released a week before, The Big Pink's A Brief History of Love came out on September 14, 2009. Masters of production and just making the great a whole lot better, Furze and Cordell produced A Brief History of Love at the Electric Lady Studios in New York. At the moment, The Big Pink are touring Europe and will be touring the US again in Spring 2010, with shows everywhere from Hoboken, New Jersey to San Diego. They’re also going to playing Cochella 2010, so get your leather, studs, and stella and have a good time.
